The Good: Gokarna is a 60's Hippie kingdom and an authentic holy Hindu town by the sea with a few excellent beaches to explore. Gokarna in Karnataka may still have an off the beaten track feel, especially before Christmas Holiday rush starts. The most eco friendly beach in India.
The Bad: Has become crowded with tourist and grungy. Accommodation may be a problem. Many mosquito. Sanitation problems.

A rickety chickin'y filled train leaves Vasco de Gama and passes by Canacona (Palolem Beach) around 3:33pm every day, five hours later to reach Gokarna Railways Station. A convenient cultural train ride through tropical coco fields and an Arabic sea views to your side. You may find your self swamped in peanut sellers or local school boys clamouring over the last fifth of a seat on a bench and of course will be very interested in you the foreigner. In five hours or so you'll arrive at Gokarna station, a new state and small world away from Goan life. Karnataka is different. |
This place has grown like a bad acid trip, but many people still seem to enjoy it. Gokarna is bit of wacky holy town cum tourist pass through to the beach. No doubt you'll find a German Yoga Baba shovelling down, glassy eyed, a plate of rice and beans as if he IS the second coming.Who know he's just might be. |
There's more to Gokarna, in fact there is a dread lock farm near by here in OM beach. You'll notice that Om beach actually looks like the OM sign. There are not toilet in the guesthouses on these Gokarna beaches, it is free shitting zone mostly in the jungle though. 10 crore live with out toilet in India you will learn to love it! Either that or off to Thailand. |
- Gokarna Town Beach: This is long Beach that goes for kilometers North, it is not that nice but it is conviently close to town. There are many place to stay the further north you go along this beach.
- Kudle Beach: This is the first beach over, it is not that big, a bit dark and narrow but still a fine beach. There are no direct road to Kudle Beach, you need to walk over a big rock and cliff area, about 25 minutes to Gokarna town.
- Om Beach: The bigger beach, newly built Om Beach Resort is here. This is the nice beach in the area.
- Paradise Beach: Small secluded past Om Beach over the rocky head land. No facililites hammoch only.
