Update May 2010

Infinite Bhanda has been called my the Maoist party - expect indefinite problems.

Prachanda the supreme lead of the Maoist communist party continues his rein of rule over Nepal.

The Maoist party (Prachanda) was elected in 2008, the elections where overseen by over 100 international delegates.

Maoist party recently declared 12 autonomous states in Nepal include "Kirat."

The Maoist army and Maoist youth frequently impose 'Moaist' law and order in Nepal.

Many Nepalese are unhappy with the situation due to extreme poverty.

70% of Nepalese are agricultural works, only 10% are employed by tourism.

Nepal is not only one of the most corrupt and also one of the poorest countries in the world. Even as foreigner your life maybe worth very little in Nepal. Medical facilities are limited, you will need to go to Thailand or India for a good hospitals. Do not depend on a fixed schedules, allow plenty of time for delays in buses, road blockage, plane cancellations.

Crimes perpetuated against foreigners are increasing. Be careful in the Thamel area of Kathmandu, particularly at night.

Be wary of internet touts. Foreigners are offered jobs in Kathmandu to write blogs reports, and spam for trekking agencies. Never send any prepaid payment in advance.

You'll hear things like, "If you don't have a guide you will be attacked..." "If you don't book with us, there will be no rooms available.." "Nepal is safer than London or New York"

Don't fall for any internet hype. Nepal is not as safe as India, Thailand, it is nowhere near as safe as any western country. Travelers need to be aware of the risks if they are planning to go to Nepal.

Before you give into this report ask yourself how legit this site itself is. I am a Nepalese myself so obviously I might be a little biased, but if I had nothing good to say I would say nothing. The report says that India is safer than Nepal? I don't believe that's true. Nepalese people are very honest people. They love foreigners. For them its comparable to a Americans seeing an elephant walk down the road. Yes the country is very poor and people have indulged in corruption, but the simplicity of the peaceful life in the hills will slow you down and bring you down to earth. Kathmandu is a squatter city but if you figure out the amazing jingle that lingers in the crowd, you'll love it for all it's worth. If you planning to go to Nepal, please do. Our country is one of agriculture but our highest source of income is Tourism. There's plenty to do there. Enjoy it. :-)
